a noite do trabalhador

De repente fecham as empresas, como se a vida dos trabalhadores não valesse nada. Os economistas relatam, com a frieza dos números, o trambolhão das vidas dos outros.
Quantos milhares de trabalhadores vão perder o direito de festejar o dia do trabalhador, nas duas semanas que faltam ?
No Reino Unido, como em Portugal, as imagens são ínquietantes.

Tears as the gates close on 5,000 careers

Hundreds of MG Rover workers and their families, many in tears, massed outside the gates of the Longbridge factory yesterday.

Sent home at the beginning of the week as uncertainty hung over their future, they returned in their droves for one final time to see workmates, pick up tools or simply to stand and wonder where it all went wrong. In the space of a few days, the air of defiance had slipped away and it was a very different atmosphere.

The devastation the closure will cause in the local community is difficult to quantify. Many families' lives have revolved around the plant, with generation following generation on to the assembly line.

Alexander Brindley, a 52-year-old spot welder who has worked at the plant for 15 years, said: "This has hit me like a bomb blast. It has all finished for us. We have no hope at all. There are no jobs round here for us. I feel cheated, as do thousands of others here.

"The management have let us down badly. They must have known for ages what was going on. We have worked harder for them than they could have ever expected and then they do this to us."
